Former Mubarak-era Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul-Gheit was elected Thursday to the post of the Arab League secretary general. 

Aboul-Gheit, 73, nominated by Egypt, will be the league’s eighth head. He will hold the post for a five-year term. 

Aboul-Gheit, known as the last Egyptian foreign minister during the Hosni Mubarak era from 2004 to 2011, will succeed outgoing secretary-general Nabil El-Araby, another former Egyptian foreign minister.
