Four people, including two police officers, were killed in a gunbattle in eastern Saudi Arabia on Thursday, the Saudi Interior Ministry said.

Ministry spokesman Mansour al-Turki said that security forces came under fire in the predominantly Shiite al-Awamiya town in al-Qatif province during a mission to arrest a number of wanted people.

According to the spokesman, two wanted militants and two security personnel were killed in an ensuing gunbattle.

Two policemen were also injured.

The Shiite-majority town has been the scene of repeated attacks in recent weeks.

On Sunday, a Saudi policeman was injured in gunfire in the town.

The attack came after a German diplomatic vehicle came under fire in the town last month.
