A French footballer has finally been given permission to leave Qatar after being held against his will at his football club for 2 years.

Zahir Belounis, a French footballer who has been held by his football club in Qatar against his will for two years, has finally been given permission to leave the country.

Due to labor laws in Qatar, he was denied an exit visa after expressing his desire to leave the El-Jaish football club due to unpaid wages.

Qatar’s ‘kafala’ system means that migrant workers are the responsibility of their employers and cannot leave the country without their employer’s permission.

His case finally received publicity when he wrote a letter to former French football player Zinedine Zidane explaining his situation.

Qatar is due to host the World Cup in 2022, but has received much criticism for its treatment of migrant workers involved in setting up the event.

Football authorities have called for investigations and even threatened to boycott the tournament.
