Gunmen kidnap 7 in Egypt's Sinai

A group of gunmen kidnapped Thursday 4 Egyptian troops and 3 policemen in the Sinai peninsula, security sources said.

The seven were travelling from El-Arish town to Rafah in northern Sinai when their vehicles were stopped by armed militants in Al-Wadi al-Akhdar region.

Sources said the gunmen might be the relatives of suspects who had been found guilty in a 2011 attack that targeted a police station in El-Arish.

Egyptian security forces beefed up measures along the Israeli border, and in Gaza frontier security was tightened as well following the abduction of the 7 servicemen.

In August 2012, a court in Egypt's Ismailia sentenced 14 people to death for the July 2011 attack on the police station that killed an army officer, five policemen and a civilian.

Egypt's president, Mohamed Morsi, met with country's defense and interior ministers to discuss the incident, sources close to Morsi's office said.

Egyptian officials have reportedly made contact with local tribal leaders, asking for assistance to facilitate release of the kidnapped servicemen.

Hamas has temporarily closed the Gaza smuggling tunnels to all crossings except for transfer of goods.
