Hamas denies leader has been expelled from Qatar-UPDATE

Hamas on Tuesday denied reports that its leader Khaled Meshaal has been expelled from Qatar.

"There is no truth to what some media outlets have published over the departure by brother Khaled Meshaal from Doha," Hamas official Ezzat al-Rishq told Reuters by telephone.

Another Hamas source confirmed that Meshaal was still in Doha and has no plans to leave the country.

"Arab and international media reports of a Qatari request for Meshaal to leave for Turkey are unfounded," the source said.

The source went on to describe the reports as "fabrications."

The Israeli Foreign Ministry on Tuesday praised reports that Qatar had decided to "expel" top Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal.

"Foreign Ministry welcomes the [reported] decision of Qatar to expel the head of Hamas' political bureau, Khaled Meshaal," ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said in a statement.

He said his ministry had long lobbied Qatar to take such a decision.

There has been no immediate comment on the issue from Qatar.

Meshaal, 58, has lived in exile since his family left the West Bank in 1967 during a war in which Israel occupied the territory, along with the Gaza Strip. He survived an Israeli assassination attempt in Jordan in 1997.

In September, Qatar asked seven senior figures from Egypt's outlawed Muslim Brotherhood to leave the country. Diplomats in the Gulf state expect more to be ejected this year, although so far there have been no official announcements.
