Palestinian faction Hamas on Saturday denounced an Egyptian court's decision to accept a lawsuit that seeks to ban and designate the Ezzeddin Qassam Brigades, Hamas' military wing, as a terrorist organization.
"The Cairo Court for Urgent Matters' decision to accept a lawsuit that calls for banning Hamas' military wing, the Ezzeddin Qassam Brigades, and its designation as a terrorist organization is aimed at defaming the Brigades," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said in a statement.
Barhoum described the accusations leveled against the Qassam Brigades as "false", which – according to him – aim at defaming Hamas and its military wing.
He also condemned what he described as "lies and incitement" by some Egyptian media outlets and attempts to drag Hamas "into political conflicts".
"Sadly, these stances are consistent with those of Israel's," he added.
The court is scheduled to hear the lawsuit on Saturday.
The plaintiff claims that the Qassam Brigades were involved in several "terrorist" operations in Egypt, including last month's militant attack on a military checkpoint in North Sinai, which left at least 31 soldiers dead.
