Senior Iranian commander Ahmadreza Pourdastan said the country’s military is ready to repel any potential attack against Iran by ISIL militants in neighboring Iraq.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, General Pourdastan, who commands Iran's Ground Forces Brigadier, said “We will not allow the ISIL terrorist group to approach the country’s borders. We are fully prepared to counter them.”

According to Press TV, the general added that ground forces have been deployed on Iran's western border regions to beef up security there.

“If the ISIL terrorist group intends to come near the country’s borders, we will target them deep inside the Iraqi territory,” General Pourdastan reportedly said.

The Iraqi army failed to halt a sudden offensive by ISIL in June, which led to the group taking control of large swathes of land in the country, including the province of Mosul in the north.

The chaos created by ISIL militants has displaced more than one million Iraqis from their homes.
