Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif arrived in Beirut late on Sunday for the first official visit to the country since assuming his prestigious post.

In a press conference on arrival, Zarif thanked Lebanese authorities for determining and apprehending the mastermind of the twin bombing of the Iranian embassy in Beirut in November.

The Lebanese government arrested in December Majid al-Majid, the leader of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, which claimed responsibility for the embassy bombing, which killed at least 23 people, including the Iranian cultural attaché.

Al-Majid later died in custody.

Zarif said his country seeks better relations with Lebanon in all fields.

He said the conflict in Syria would only be solved through political dialogue, adding that Tehran would attend Geneva II conference on Syria if invited without pre-conditions.

The foreign minister asserted that Tehran was seeking the best relations with Saudi Arabia, urging concerted efforts against terrorism.
