Lebanon has rejected an offer of military aid from Iran, Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan said Tuesday.
In comments made to the Mehr news agency in Tehran, Dehghan said "Iran was ready to send military equipment to Lebanon and was waiting for Lebanese government’s approval, but they rejected the offer."
The U.S. had warned the Lebanese government against accepting the Iranian offer.
The U.S. is believed to have provided the Lebanese army with around $700 million since 2005.
Iran's Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani had recently said Iran would “gift” the Lebanese army military equipment and weapons.
Following the Iranian announcement, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that such a military aid would be seen as a violation of international sanctions on Iran.
