A Kurdish politician from northern Iraq has called on Turkey to allow the transition of peshmerga forces and weapons to the Syrian border town of Kobani.

Speaking exclusively to the Anadolu Agency in Istanbul on Wednesday, Kurdo R. Sewkany, a member of the Kurdistan Islamic Union – a party represented in the Kurdistan Regional Government – said the situation in the besieged town was “very difficult” for both Turkey and Kurds.

His remarks came before a statement by Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan who said he personally made the offer of sending peshmerga forces to help fighters battling the Islamic State of Iraq and the Leavant in Syria.

However, Erdogan explicitly rejected the idea of sending arms and munitions to Kurdish forces in Kobani.

Kobani, which is also known as Ayn al-Arab, has been the scene of fierce battles between Kurdish groups and ISIL – described by Sewkany as a “terrorist force.”

“We want to help our brothers to push ISIL back,” he said.

“So, the Turkish government must allow [the passage of] weapons to support Kobani fighters and it must allow Kurdish peshmerga from northern Iraq to go to Kobani.”

Sewkany claimed that Ankara does not want to support Kobani with weapons, thinking that one day the guns will be turned against Turkey.

On Monday, the U.S. made airdrops loaded with weapons to Kobani to aid the PYD-led group of Kurdish fighters that are battling the ISIL militants there since mid-September.

Erdogan said on Wednesday in Ankara that the decision to make the airdrops was "wrong" because some of the weapons had reportedly fallen into the hands of ISIL.

"They have been showing those weapon caches on their websites for days now," Erdogan said.

Iraq's Kurdish parliament unanimously voted on Wednesday to send peshmerga forces via Turkey to Kobani.

Yusuf Mohammed Sadiq, speaker of the Kurdish parliament, said peshmerga forces would go to Kobani as a part of the international coalition’s "fight against terrorism." This is the first time peshmerga would venture out of its region to combat "terrorists," he said.
