The Israeli government has approved the rebuilding of the Tiferet Yisrael Synagogue in Jerusalem’s Old City, a statement by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said Thursday.
Israeli officials laid the cornerstone for the rebuilding of the synagogue at a ceremony in the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City on Tuesday.
The Tiferet Yisrael Synagogue was built in 1872. Israel has earmarked $16 million for the rebuilding of the Jewish synagogue between 2014 and 2017.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the 1967 Middle East War. It later annexed the holy city in 1980, claiming it as the capital of the self-proclaimed Jewish state in a move never recognized by the international community.Last Mod: 30 Mayıs 2014, 10:46
