The Israeli government on Sunday announced that the Syria-based ISIL and Al-Nusra Front groups had been designated “terrorist organizations”.
“ISIS [another acronym for ISIL], Jabhat al-Nusra [the Nusra Front] and the Abdullah Azzam Brigades will be regarded as terrorist organizations,” Ofir Gendelman, a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said via Twitter.
The confirmation reaffirmed an earlier declaration by Israel’s Defense Ministry, which last year listed all three as terrorist groups.
“We are constantly fighting ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra and other terrorist organizations,” Netanyahu said after a Sunday cabinet meeting.
He also referred to reports by the Israeli military that a Palestinian citizen of Israel had crossed into Syria on Saturday using a paraglider -- purportedly in order to join an armed group there.
“Yesterday, an Israeli civilian crossed our border in the Golan Heights into Syria to join the ranks of the enemy,” Netanyahu said.
“We will act to nullify his citizenship,” he asserted. “This is what is done in any such case.”
He added: “Whoever joins the ranks of the enemy to fight against Israel will not be an Israeli citizen.”
It was not immediately clear whether the new Israeli ban on ISIL supplemented an earlier declaration signed by Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon in September of last year, which allowed legal action to be taken against anyone linked to the militant group.
On Friday, ISIL released its first-ever video recorded completely in the Hebrew language, in which it vowed to stage attacks against Jews in Jerusalem.
ISIL has also reportedly stepped up its calls on Palestinian youth to carry out so-called “lone wolf” attacks on Israelis, according to the Middle East Media Research Institute, a think tank founded by a former Israeli government adviser.
Turkey, the U.S., the EU, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan -- along with a handful of other countries -- have officially declared ISIL a “terrorist” organization, especially after the group overran large swathes of Iraq and Syria in mid-2014.Last Mod: 26 Ekim 2015, 09:14
