The Israeli army detained three Palestinians on Thursday after they snuck through a security fence separating Israel and the Gaza Strip, an Israeli military official said Thursday.

The three Palestinians, who entered Israel's Eshkol district after they crossed from southern Gaza's Khan Younis, have been referred to investigation at Israel's domestic security apparatus, the official was quoted as saying by Israel's Channel 10.

The official said that the three Palestinians were not armed at the time of their arrest.

The Palestinian government has yet to comment on the incident.

Local chiefs of Israeli communities adjacent to the Gaza Strip have recently called on the Israeli government to fortify the security fence and reinforce military presence at the Israeli side.

Four days ago, Israeli forces opened fire on a ten-year-old Palestinian boy near the border in Khan Younis.

Every now and then, Israel announces the arrest of Palestinians who attempt to cross from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel in search for work.

In 2013, Israeli forces detained 75 Palestinians, including 32 minors, who crossed from the Gaza Strip into Israel to seek work, according to Palestinian NGO Al Mizan Center for Human Rights.

Unemployment and poverty rates in the Gaza Strip have both exceeded 50 percent, according to figures by the Palestinian government.

Gaza's labor union estimates that nearly 30,000 workers in the Gaza Strip have lost their jobs due to Israel's recent offensive on the territory in addition to nearly 170,000 who have lost their work because of the years-long Israeli blockade.

At least 2,160 Palestinians were killed and nearly 11,000 injured in a 51-day Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip in July and August.

The offensive came to a halt on August 26 under an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire between Israel and Palestinian resistance factions.
