For the first time, Israel has convicted one of its own citizens for illegally selling military equipment.
Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported Sunday that an Israeli citizen had admitted to illegally selling military communications devices, for which he was slapped with four-and-a-half months of community service and an $18,000 fine as part of a plea bargain.
A former engineer at the Israeli military's communications division, the man reportedly bought devices and spare parts from defense companies, which he then sold -- without a license -- via U.S.-based auction website Ebay.
His conviction was the first to be made under the Israeli Defense Export Control Law, which was introduced in 2007 with a view to bolstering government oversight of military sales.
Prosecutors had accused the man of exposing the Israeli military to security risks and endangering national security.Last Mod: 01 Kasım 2015, 17:41
