Leader of Israel's right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu Party Avigdor Lieberman will return to assume his post as the country's foreign minister after he was cleared by an Israeli court on charges of fraud last week.
According to Radio Israel , the Israeli government is set to approve Lieberman's reinstatement during a weekly meeting on Sunday.
The foreign ministry portfolio remained empty after the formation of the current Israeli government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Radio Israel said that Deputy Foreign Minister Zaef Alkian, who oversaw the ministry in Lieberman’s absence, will complete his term on Sunday.
Alkian was quoted by Israeli media as saying that he is considering a bid for the post of Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman, which is currently headed by Lieberman.
On Wednesday, Lieberman was acquitted of corruption charges related to allegations he gave an Israeli diplomat an ambassador's post in exchange for a tip-off about a police probe into his affairs.
