Head of the Syrian opposition coalition Ahmed Jarba met on Tuesday with Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi in Cairo to renew his demand to be Syria's representative to the pan-Arab body, a source with the coalition said.

No information has yet been available on the details of the meeting.

Earlier this week, the pan-Arab body decided to invite the opposition coalition to the upcoming Arab summit, to be hosted by Kuwait on March 25, as a representative of the Syrian people.

Jarba was invited to brief Arab leaders during the Kuwait summit on the latest developments and the opposition's view on solving the Syrian crisis, diplomatic sources said.

The Arab League suspended Syria's membership in late 2011.

Syria has been in the throes of civil war since March 2011 after a peaceful uprising against President Bashar al-Assad escalated into an armed insurrection following a violent government crackdown on anti-regime demonstrations.

According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, around 140,000 people have been killed since the beginning of the conflict in March 2011.
