Egypt's interim President Adly Mansour on Saturday met with King Abdullah II of Jordan, who arrived in Cairo earlier on Saturday for the first visit by an Arab leader since the ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi.

The two leaders discussed bilateral relations and developments in Egypt and the Middle East, according to a statement issued by the Egyptian presidency.

The statement added that the two sides had agreed to bolster bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Jordanian king reiterated his support for the "national choices" of the Egyptian people and expressed hope that Egypt would overcome current circumstances to achieve security and stability, the statement said.

Abdullah left Cairo later on Saturday following his brief visit to Egypt, the first such trip by an Arab leader since Morsi was ousted by the army three weeks ago after mass protests against his regime.

The army subsequently suspended the constitution and installed Mansour, the head of Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court, as interim president.

Jordan was among the first countries to recognize the new administration in Egypt and congratulate Mansour on his appointment.
