Kuwaiti prosecution authorities on Sunday ordered the release of a former lawmaker on bail after being held for allegedly "spreading false news and insulting the crown prince," according to the ex-MP's defense lawyer.

"The prosecution authorities ordered the release of Waleed al-Tabtabaie on bail worth 3,000 Kuwaiti dinar [roughly $9,000]," defense lawyer Thamer al-Jadie told the press.

On Friday, Kuwaiti security forces arrested al-Tabtabaie for a tweet in which he claimed that there was pressure from Tehran to sideline Kuwaiti Crown Prince Nawaf Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, according to local security sources.

Al-Tabtabaie, for his part, has denied all the charges against him, a judicial source said.

On Wednesday, al-Tabtabaie claimed on Twitter that Iran was "exerting pressure on Kuwait to sideline Crown Prince Nawaf and replace him with someone who enjoys strong relations with Iran."

"We wish for the failure of these malicious attempts," he added.

Al-Tabtabaie's statements were made concurrently with a number of Saudi royal decrees that replaced Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz with Prince Mohamed bin Nayef as the oil-rich kingdom's crown prince.

The Saudi monarch also promoted his son, Prince Mohamed, the minister of defense, to Deputy Crown Prince, making him second-in-line to the throne.
