A Libyan soldier was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the eastern city of Benghazi on Thursday.

Paratrooper Mohamed Ibrahim was killed by unidentified attackers, a security source told Anadolu Agency.

Galaa Hospital spokeswoman Fadia al-Barghathi confirmed the soldier's death.

"He was shot directly in the head," she told AA.

According to the security source, the killing comes amid a recent spate of attacks in the city targeting military personnel.

The transitional government and its security forces, meanwhile, have struggled to contain the armed groups that helped overthrow Gaddafi but which held onto their weapons after the 2011 uprising.
