Scores of Malaysian students who study in Egypt's Al-Azhar University returned to Egypt on Wednesday, two months after being evacuated from the country due to political unrest triggered by the July 3 ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi.

At least 42 Malaysian students arrived in Cairo on Wednesday – with more on the way – to catch up with the new academic year, a security source at Cairo International Airport said.

In August, the Malaysian government ordered the evacuation of around 1,000 Malaysian nationals studying at Al-Azhar University due to political turmoil in Egypt.

Egypt has remained in a state of crisis since Morsi's July 3 ouster by the country's military establishment following mass demonstrations against his presidency.

In mid-August, hundreds of pro-Morsi demonstrators were killed when security forces violently dispersed two protests camps in Cairo and Giza.

Since the launch of its academic year almost two weeks ago, Al-Azhar University has been rocked by pro-Morsi rallies on an almost daily basis.
