A new Israeli government survey has revealed that Mohamed, the name of Islam's prophet, was the most common name given to newborn boys in Israel in 2013.

A study conducted by the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics, released Thursday on the occasion of the United Nation's Universal Children's Day, found that the name Mohamed was given to 15.6 of newborn Muslim boys in Israel, whereas Noam was given to 2.4 percent of newborn Jewish boys inside Israel.

The study also showed that the three most popular Arab names for newborn girls in Israel in 2013 were Jana, Miriam and Aleen while the most popular Jewish name for girls was Noah, Shira and Tamar.

The new study was released on the heels of a controversy surrounding a list released two months ago by Israel's Administration of Border Crossings, Population, and Immigration of most popular names in Israel which hid the fact that Mohammad ranked first as the most popular in the country, reported Israel's daily Yediot Ahronot.

Arab Israelis make up around 20 percent of Israel's population of 8 million, according to latest figures by the Israeli government.
