There are reports of violent protests spreading throughout the country after Egypt's military chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi called for pro-army rallies.

A group of people attacked some Morsi supporters, mostly women, protesting in the streets, with axes, machetes and sticks.

Protesters have taken shelter in a building after the attack but the group tried to storm in by breaking the doors and windows.

Many of the pro-Morsi protesters were injured after the attack while the security forces did not intervene in the clashes between the groups.
