Several scholars and preachers affiliated to Al-Azhar, the highest seat of learning in the Sunni world, demonstrated Monday outside its headquarters against Grand Imam Ahmed El-Tayeb.

The protesters accused Tayeb of siding with the army against ousted President Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president.

They carried pictures of Morsi and chanted slogans critical of army chief and Defense Minister Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi.

The security personnel manning the headquarters closed the doors, according to an Anadolu Agency correspondent.

The powerful army overthrew Morsi on July 3 following mass protests against his regime.

Under a roadmap coordinated with some political, youth and religious leaders, including Sheikh Tayeb, the army suspended the constitution and installed Adly Mansour, the head of the constitutional court as interim president.
