Supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi flashed the famous Rabaa sign during the African Championship final between Egyptian giants Al-Ahly and Orlando Pirates on Saturday night in Johannesburg.
"We have come here to support Al-Ahly but we also sympathize with President Morsi, detained Muslim Brotherhood leaders and our fellow Egyptians who were killed during the pro-democracy protest," one of the fans flashing the Rabaa sign told Anadolu Agency inside Orlando Stadium.
Another fan said they were flashing the sign to send a message to the Egyptian military that they wanted ousted Morsi reinstate because he was the freely elected president.
"The time for the military junta is over. We want Morsi reinstated," said the fan, adding that no one will stop them from showing the now-famous sign.
Meanwhile, a group of Egyptian fans also arrived with a flag reading Free Gaza.
"As we watch the game we also want to create awareness in the world and South Africa in particular about the plight of oppressed Palestinians," said one of the Egyptian fans.
