Muslim Brotherhood criticizes West's 'double standards'

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood has accused Western governments and politicians of applying what it called "double standards" in dealing with the political crises in Egypt and Ukraine.

"The crisis in Ukraine exposes Western double standards," the Brotherhood, the movement from which ousted president Mohamed Morsi hails, said in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Anadolu Agency.

Ukraine has been in a deep political crisis since November after Russian-backed President Viktor Yanukovich rejected an economic deal with the European Union in favor of closer ties with Moscow.

Since then, thousands of opposition protesters have been camping out in the capital Kiev. More than 70 people were killed in violent confrontations between police and protesters this week.

The Brotherhood said that western governments and politicians were quick to denounce "government crimes" against protesters in Ukraine.

"However, they kept their partnership with the coup regime and only uttered words of condemnation of crimes committed in Egypt," it added.

Egypt has been in turmoil since the army unseated democratically elected Morsi following mass protests against his presidency.

Supporters of the elected leader describe his overthrow as a "military coup" while opponents term it a "military-backed revolution".
