Syrian State TV said on Friday Abu Mohammad al-Golani, leader of the rebel group Nusra Front, had been killed in a battle with regime forces in Lazkiya.
The Dampress website known for its closeness with the Damascus administration published the reports based on information obtained from military sources, but did not indicate the conditions under which al-Jolani died.
Nusra Front, however, denied the claims and told Reuters that Golani was alive.
Syria's state television later pulled the reports from its website without providing an explanation.
Meanwhile, the London-based Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said reports of al-Jolani's murder had not yet been verified.
