Egyptian fighter jets broke the sound barrier over Cairo on Friday, causing loud booms throughout the capital, eyewitnesses said.

The aircrafts flew over several areas of Cairo, including al-Nahda Square in Giza, where thousands of deposed President Mohammed Morsi’s loyalists have been camping out since his ouster on July 3.

Egypt is marking today the 40th anniversary of the 1973 Yom Kippur War against Israel, which falls on the 10th day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

This year's celebration coincides with mass protests by Morsi's supporters calling for his reinstatement.

Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president was removed from office by the army following mass protests against his regime.

The army subsequently suspended the constitution and installed the head of the constitutional court, Adly Mansour, as interim president.

Morsi’s supporters have since taken to the streets across the country defending his democratic legitimacy and demanding his return to office.
