UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres stated that despite the promise of the international society to donate 1.5 million dollars for Syria in an international conference in January, as of March 15 only 21 percent of the donations were collected.
Guterres warned against a "potential disaster" in terms of political, humanity and security in his address to the senate in the US capital of Washington, according to the UN official website.
Guterres stated that there were heart-wrenching reports on sexual harassment towards women and children and a separate allowance was needed to prepare programs for the victims and those under risk.
Stating that over 70 thousand poeple lost their lives, over 3 million people were displaced and 1.1 million had to seek refuge in neighbor countries since March 2011, Guterres said, "If the problem of the Syrian refugees will not be solved, we can have an outburst in the Middle East. Noone would like this to happen."Last Mod: 21 Mart 2013, 14:46
