At least 10 people were killed in regime airstrikes in the northern Syrian city of Raqqa on Sunday, according to local sources.

Speaking anonymously due to fears for their safety, the sources said that 10 people, including women and children, were killed and 35 people were wounded during the regime's barrel bomb attacks in Raqqa's Tabka district, which has been under the control of ISIL.

The wounded were taken to hospitals in the districts.

The sources added that the attacks caused heavy damage in the area.

Syria has been locked in a vicious civil war since early 2011, when the Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity.

Since then, more than a quarter of a million people have been killed and more than 10 million displaced across the war-battered country, according to the UN.

The Syrian Center for Policy Research, however, put the death toll from the six-year conflict at more than 470,000 people.
