Saudi authorities have detained 35 Egyptian fishermen for violating territorial waters, Bakri Abul-Hassan, head of a fishermen syndicate in the canal city of Suez, said.

In statements to Anadolu Agency, Abul-Hassan said that sea waves had forced the boat of the fishermen into Saudi waters.

"Saudi naval forces opened fire on the boat, causing it to catch fire," he added.

Anadolu Agency could not get comment from Saudi officials on the allegation.

Last week, Saudi naval forces shot dead an Egyptian fisherman, injured another and arrested 66 others after their boat violated Saudi territorial waters.

Egypt's consulate in Jeddah has appealed to Egyptian fishermen to abide by Saudi fishing regulations.

According to the consulate, a total of 205 violations were committed by Egyptian fishermen in 2012 and 2013.
