Saudi Foreign Minister Saud Al Faisal, 75, underwent a successful backbone surgery in the United States, the Saudi Royal Court said Saturday.

It added in a statement that was quoted by the official Saudi news agency that the Foreign Minister was undergoing physical therapy.

Born in 1940, Al Faisal has been the foreign minister of Saudi Arabia since 1975. He is the son of King Abdulaziz Al Saud.

He absented himself from a meeting of the foreign ministers of Gulf states on Tuesday in Saudi capital Riyadh.

The meeting focused on developments taking place in Yemen.

News about the backbone surgery comes only one day after the death of Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz.
