The monarchs of Saudi Arabia and Jordan met on Thursday in the western Saudi city of Jeddah, where they discussed the situation in the Gaza Strip, official Saudi SPA news agency reported.

Talks between King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and King Abdullah of Jordan focused on the regional and international scene as well as the situation in the Gaza Strip and efforts aiming to end the Israeli “aggression” on the Palestinian enclave, the agency reported.

The Gaza Strip had sustained more than a month of relentless Israeli attacks that left 1961 Palestinians dead and more than 10,000 others injured.

An Egypt-proposed five-day ceasefire started in Gaza on Thursday to give a chance for Palestinian and Israeli negotiators to reach a permanent arrangement.

The two sides have started indirect negotiations in the Egyptian capital Cairo, but they are yet to reach a deal.
