A leaked audio recording purportedly by Egypt's army chief and Defense Minister Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi has showed the top general describing his predecessor Hussein Tantawi as a "great man", saying that Tantawi is to credit for all the actions taken by the military.
In the video, broadcast on Friday by the Qatar-owned Al-Jazeera Mubasher Misr, al-Sisi appears addressing a group of army officers, asking them to view the ex-army leader from his own prism.
"Army officers who have not worked with Tantawi do not know him," al-Sisi purportedly says in the two-minute footage.
"I want to tell you that this man is great, I swear by God, he is great," the army chief added of Tantawi.
He said that the ex-army chief is to credit for all the actions of the army at present, adding that Tantawi, who served for years under former president Hosni Mubarak, had pushed for these actions for a long time.
Without going into much detail, al-Sisi said army officers who feel angry at Tantawi now "do not just understand the realities".
The leaked video comes a few days before Egyptians start marking the bloody events that took place on Mohamed Mahmoud Street, just a few meters away from the Interior Ministry headquarters in downtown Cairo on November 19, 2011.
Bloody clashes had erupted for a week on the street between demonstrators and policemen, leaving scores of people dead.
Youth groups accuse the military that was headed by Tantawi and ran Egypt for a year and a half after Mubarak's downfall of being responsible for the violence and called for Tantawi's trial.
The new video is one of many leaked videos broadcast recently by Al-Jazeera and the news network Rasd in which the Egyptian army chief speaks about many different issues.
The channel, however, did not mention how it got the footage. No official comment from the army was made until 10:30 GTM.Last Mod: 16 Kasım 2013, 12:45
