Six security personnel were killed and another three injured on Friday when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off near two security checkpoints in western Cairo, according to the Interior Ministry.
"The explosion occurred outside the Al-Salaam Mosque on Al-Haram Street near two security checkpoints," read a ministry statement.
According to the statement, two police officers, a policeman and three police conscripts were killed, while another three conscripts were injured.
In its own statement, the Health Ministry also confirmed the casualties.
Security forces have since cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the incident.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for Friday’s bombing.
