Syrian National Council (SNC), the biggest Syrian opposition group in the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, announced its split from the umbrella group after the latter decided to attend the Geneva II conference.

In a written statement by the council head George Sabra, the SNC declared the withdrawal of all its delegations and institutions from the umbrella group because of its decision to attend the conference that will host a Syrian regime delegation. The umbrella group announced its plans to attend the conference on Monday.

Sabra said that attending the Geneva II conference is against the protocol of the SNC, and they would not enter into dialogue with the Syrian regime.

The SNC has a total of 25 members out of 121-member national coalition, making them the majority group in the party of 30 opposition groups including Kurds and Assyrians.

Divisions in the national opposition umbrella group also appeared early this month, as 40 members from the coalition resigned after the re-election of Saudi-affiliated Ahmad Jarba as the coalition leader.
