Syria applies to join Shanghai Cooperation Organization

Syria has applied to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and has also expressed its interest in joining the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Community Customs Union, according to the country's state-run news agency SANA.

Assistant Economy and Foreign Trade Minister Hayyan Salman told the agency that the application forms to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had also asked to join as an alternative to the European Union.

Salman also added that Syria seeks to join Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan in the Eurasian Union. The growing Eurasian Union, which is also due to receive an application from Armenia and has also attracted the interest of Kyrgyzstan is deemed by some as being the reformation of the Soviet Union using a model similar to that of the EU.

As for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, it was formed in 2001 and includes six countries: China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
