Syria: Cautious calm prevails in Latakia, Damascus

World Bulletin / News Desk

Cautious calm has prevailed Tuesday in northwestern Syria’s Latakia province and capital Damascus following a lull in fighting declared by the U.S. and Russia.

“No clashes were reported in Latakia’s northern countryside and Eastern Ghouta since Friday,” local sources said.

According to the sources, regime forces and opposition fighters in the Jabal al-Akrad and the Turkmen Mountain areas have largely respected the lull.

The two sides, however, have carried out mortar attacks now and then, the sources said.

Last week, Moscow and Washington brokered a temporary lull in fighting in some parts of Syria.

In April, at least 32 civilians were killed in regime attacks on schools and hospitals in Eastern Ghouta near Damascus.
