Syrian oppositions capture air base in south

World Bulletin / News Desk

A Syrian oppositions alliance said it had captured an air base from the army in southern Syria on Thursday, a gain that would compound setbacks for President Bashar al Assad in the area after losing a nearby military base this week.

Issam al-Rayyes, spokesman for the Southern Front alliance of opposition groups, said al-Thala air base in Sweida province had been "liberated". Syrian officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

A second opposition commander however said the base had yet to fall to the gunmen. Bashar al-Zoubi, head of the Yarmouk Army, said he expected that to happen before the day ended.

Opposition alliance shoot down Syrian military jet in south

Syrian oppositions said they had shot down a military jet on Thursday in southern Syria, where fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad seized a major army base earlier this week.

Bashar al-Zoubi, leader of the Yarmouk Army group, told his fighters had shot down the Russian-built MiG using anti-aircraft guns.

A video posted online by the opposition affiliated Syrian Media Organisation appeared to show a jet falling from the sky.

Syrian officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
