Egyptian security forces on Tuesday killed a wanted man in the Sinai Peninsula who authorities had described as the "Takfiris' Mufti," a security source has said.
Mohamed Muhareb, also known as Abu Mounir, was killed in a joint police-army security operation in North Sinai, the source told Anadolu Agency.
Security forces raided Muhareb's hideout, leading to an exchange of fire that left him and his son dead, the source said.
Egyptian authorities have yet to issue a statement on the operation.
Egypt's Sinai Peninsula has seen a surge in violence against security personnel since the July 3 ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi by the military.
Scores of policemen and soldiers have been killed in dozens of recent attacks, especially in the peninsula's volatile northeastern quadrant, which shares borders with both Israel and the Gaza Strip.Last Mod: 26 Kasım 2013, 12:01
