Tamarod movement has thrown its weight behind army chief Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi's bid to run in Egypt's upcoming presidential election.

"Our decision is to support Field Marshal Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi for president," founder Mahmoud Badr said in a statement read out following a meeting of the group's Congress on Monday.

The announcement came one day after the group suspended three co-founders over their support for leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi for presidency.

Tamarod movement had spearheaded massive and well-coordinated protests that led to the July 3 ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi by the military.

Al-Sisi, widely seen as the driving force behind Morsi's ouster, has remained tight-lipped as to whether he plans to vie for Egypt's top office.

But speculation has been rife that he would soon resign from his military post to make way for a possible presidential bid.

No date has been set for the presidential election, but the polls are expected to be held within three months.

The election is the second step in an army-imposed roadmap for Egypt's political transition following Morsi's overthrow.
