In her speech to the UNESCO General Assembly, Turkey's Permanent Representative Gurcan Balik stressed that UNESCO’s role in Syria had become more important than ever before.

Balik reminded that regime forces had recently attacked the historic Omar Mosque.

Stressing that hundreds of historic artworks which were impossible to bring back have been destroyed or damaged by Syrian regime forces, Balik noted that religious, cultural and historical sites were being used for military purposes.

Emphasizing that Syrian society is deprived of fundamental human rights such as living, education, water,  and the rights to freedom of thought and press, the Turkish ambassador expressed that these are all inalienable rights which UNESCO represents.
