The Turkish secret service organization MIT was involved in freeing 9 Lebanese hostages in Syria, in return for the freeing of two Turkish pilots being held hostage in Lebanon.

Reports are suggesting that the Turkish secret service organization MIT was behind the release of 9 Lebanese hostages, who has been caught in the middle of a battle between Syrian opposition groups in the northern city of Azaz.

According to the Sabah newspaper, the Syria-based team apparently rushed to the scene where a battle had broken out between opposition groups and al-Qaeda linked rebels, took the hostages out of the line of fire, and brought them to Turkey.

The 9 Lebanese had been held by a opposition group in Syria since May 2012. Turkey has been working with the Syrian opposition along with Lebanon, Qatar and Iran to solve the situation diplomatically.

After haven been given the go-ahead by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish MIT agents in Syria went ahead with the operation, which ended successfully on 16 October.

In return, two Turkish pilots who had been held hostage in Lebanon for two months were also released from captivity.
