It has been reported that the UK is facilitating indirect talks between the US and Iranian-backed Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.
According to the Kuwaiti Al-Rai newspaper, British diplomats are in talks with Hezbollah representatives over how to deal with Al-Qaeda. The details of the talks are then passed on to the US.
A diplomatic source in Washington was quoted as saying that the talks “are aimed at keeping tabs on the changes in the region and the world, and prepare for the upcoming return of Iran to the international community.”
The US officially recognized Hezbollah as a ‘terrorist’ organization recently due to their direct support of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria. For this reason, US officials cannot meet Hezbollah members directly, unlike British diplomats, due to the fact that the UK has not yet declared Hezbollah as a ‘terrorist’ group.
This is another sign of warming relations between the US and Iran after a deal was reached regarding the Iranian nuclear program at the P5+1 meeting in Geneva last week. US allies, including the UK, have also improved relations with Iran as a result. However, Israel continues to protest against the deal, and has even threatened to attack Iran alone.
Pro-Israeli groups in the US are putting pressure on the congress to place further sanctions on Iran.Last Mod: 28 Kasım 2013, 11:30
