US urges Saleh to step down, allow Yemen to move on

The U.S. State Department urged Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who unexpectedly returned to Yemen on Friday, to sign a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) accord and relinquish power.

"We want to see Yemen move forward on the basis of the GCC proposal, whether President Saleh is in or out of the country," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters.

"He can make that happen by signing this accord, stepping down from power and allowing his country to move on," she said.
