Yemen FM: government to return to Aden 'soon'

The Yemeni government will return to the southern city of Aden “very soon”, Foreign Minister Riyad Yassin said Thursday.

Speaking to reporters after talks with Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi in Cairo, Yassin blamed the Shia Houthi group for the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Yemen.

“The Houthis are bombing hospitals and civilian areas,” he said.

Yemen descended into chaos last September, when the Houthis overran capital Sanaa and moved to capture other provinces, prompting Saudi Arabia and several Arab allies to launch a massive air campaign against the Shia group.

Last month, Prime Minister Khaled Bahah said that government forces – backed by a Saudi-led Arab coalition – have managed to capture Aden from the Houthis.

Yassin said that there will be no political solution to the Yemeni crisis without implementing UN Security Council resolution 2216.

Adopted last April, the resolution calls on Houthi forces to “immediately and unconditionally” end all violence, retreat from all areas under their control, return military equipment seized earlier and release all political detainees and child soldiers.
