A Yemeni military commander survived an assassination attempt in the southern province of Abyan on Saturday, a security source said.
Brig. Gen. Mohamed Abdullah al-Shamba, the commander of the 115th division of the Yemeni army, was injured when an explosive charge exploded at his vehicle in the Lawdar district, the source said.
There has been no claim of responsibility and Yemeni authorities have yet to comment.
Four Yemeni soldiers were killed and seven others injured early Saturday in an attack on a military checkpoint in Abyan's Al-Mahfad district, the first attack against a military checkpoint in Al-Mahfad since army troops flushed Al-Qaeda militants out of the district early last month.
The Yemeni army has launched a major military offensive in the southern parts of the country in pursuit of Al-Qaeda militants for months now.
