A total of 419 Palestinian pilgrims crossed the Rafah crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip on Sunday, a Gazan official said.

"Some 419 Palestinians left the Gaza Strip through the Rafah crossing for performing Umrah (lesser pilgrimage)," Maher Abu Sabha, the head of Gaza's crossing and border authority, told Anadolu Agency.

Egyptian authorities, however, barred 21 Palestinians from crossing the terminal, he added.

Egyptian officials could not be reached for comment.

Egyptian officials have decided to reopen the Rafah crossing on Sunday for two days to allow Palestinian pilgrims to cross.

Egypt has tightened its grip on the border with Gaza since last July's ouster of Mohamed Morsi – the country's first freely elected president – by the army.

Egyptian authorities accuse Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, of interfering in Egypt's domestic affairs and carrying out attacks inside the country, charges that Hamas has repeatedly denied.
