Speaking for the first time in the name of the State of Palestine, whose UN status was raised to observer state, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday in New York.

Speaking at the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly, Abbas said: "Our objective is to achieve a permanent and comprehensive agreement and a peace treaty between the States of Palestine and Israel that resolves all outstanding issues and answers all questions, which allows us to officially declare an end of conflict and claims."

Abbas called on the international community to remain alert to condemn and stop the continuation of settlement construction on Palestinian land, particularly in Jerusalem.

Abbas, who attended a reception given at the Turkish Center by Turkish President Abdullah Gul, who is in New York on the occasion of the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly, spoke with U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday.
