Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been captured in photos crying during the funeral of former Israeli Prime Minister President Shimon Peres at Jerusalem's Mount Herzl Cemetery.

Abbas' reaction stimulated anger on social media; as many criticized Abbas for not crying over the Palestinians killed by Israel.

Many Palestinians expressed their reaction by saying that what Abbas did was "embarrassing".

Previously on Thursday, Muhammad al-Madani, who is in charge with relations with Israeli society in the Palestinian Authority, said that Abbas was expected to be accompanied by a delegation of senior Palestinian officials, including Majid Faraj, the head of Palestinian Intelligence, Saeb Erekat, the secretary general of the PLO and Civil Affairs Minister Hussein Al-Sheikh.

Peres was born in modern-day Belarus but moved to British-mandated Palestine in the 1930s and later joined the Hagenah, a Jewish armed group that fought Palestinians after British forces began withdrawal in 1947.

As a senior official in Israel's defense ministry during the 1950s, he was considered instrumental in building Israel's nuclear weapons project.
