Abbas slammed the attack on Ziad Abu Ein, the official in charge of the Israeli settlements file at the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), as a "savage" and "barbaric" act that could not be "accepted or tolerated."
"We will take all necessary measures after hearing the findings of the investigation into his death," Abbas said in a statement.
Abu Ein, who carries the rank of minister in the Palestinian unity government, died after suffocating on teargas used by Israeli troops to disperse an anti-occupation demonstration held in the northern West Bank town of Turmus Ayya.
Dozens of other demonstrators suffered temporary asphyxiation after inhaling excessive amounts of teargas.
Abu Ein was rushed to the Ramallah medical complex in critical condition before being pronounced dead, according to an Anadolu Agency correspondent.
